Louisiana ranks poorly in terms of pedestrian safety

In past decades, getting around on foot was considered one of the safest travel modes. During the latter half of the 20th century, things began to change for pedestrians. There was an increase in motor vehicle use as more and more people chose to ride instead of walk.

By the time the 21st century arrived, pedestrian accidents leading to death or severe injury became almost normal (instead of unusual). In 2021, pedestrian deaths reached a new high, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), with nearly 7,500 fatalities.

Louisiana: Dangerous for pedestrians

A report prepared by Smart Growth America singled out the ten states with the most pedestrian accident fatalities. The report reveals that in 2020, Louisiana was the 6th most dangerous state for those who walk. Unfortunately, that was not the only mention of our region in the study report.

Baton Rouge: One of the 25 most hazardous metros

Those involved in the study also looked closely enough at resource data to identify the most hazardous metro regions for pedestrians. Baton Rouge took the 11th spot with an average pedestrian death rate of 3.2 out of every 100,000 people per year.

You deserve restitution after an injury

As you might expect, most pedestrian accidents result in severe or catastrophic injuries in those who survive. Victims often suffer spine and head injuries as well as internal damage or bleeding. The cost of treatment for these and other injuries is astronomical and out of reach for many.

If negligence caused or contributed to your pedestrian accident injuries, don’t give up on justice. First, learn as much as possible about Louisiana accident and injury compensation laws, then reach out for guidance to aid in your claim.
