Spotting the signs of nursing home violence

The decision to place your elderly relative in an assisted living facility is never easy, but it’s often for the best. You’ve likely spent a lot of time researching the most desirable place before making a commitment.

The facility that you choose should not only be as advertised, but it owes a legal duty of care to your family member. Unfortunately, some facilities fail in this duty of care, and your family member may suffer from violent nursing home abuse. Outlined below are some of the warning signs that you should look out for.

Physical evidence

Where violence is concerned, the main thing to look out for is physical evidence. This can include bruising on the arms of your family member, which could indicate that they have been violently restrained. In some cases, elderly residents can be tricky to manage, but violence is never justified. The nursing home should be adequately prepared to deal with vulnerable and even potentially difficult residents with dignity and respect.

Emotional signs

Sometimes, physical evidence is not always immediately apparent. You may have to pay closer attention to how your loved one is doing emotionally. Do they seem withdrawn and lacking confidence? Is there one member of the care team who seems to be particularly authoritative and potentially manipulative?

It’s also important to remember that physical abuse doesn’t always come from staff. Another resident may be the culprit. In such a scenario, the nursing home still has a duty to prevent this abuse from occurring on its watch.

The legal duty of care owed to nursing home residents should always be honored. If a nursing home facility has been abusive or negligent, make sure you look into your legal options.
